Breeding Accel reflects on a successful IPM Essen 2025

4 Feb 2025

With IPM Essen 2025 over, Breeding Accel looks back on a show packed with valuable meetings, innovations and milestones. The collective of leading breeders – KP Holland, Interplant Roses, Schoneveld Breeding, Labeau, Royal Van Zanten and Fresh Forward – has once again proven to be a powerhouse in the ornamental horticulture sector.

  • Breakthrough in breeding: Digital PhenotypingOne of the innovations on everyone’s lips at IPM Essen 2025 was Digital Phenotyping, a groundbreaking technique that is helping Breeding Accel companies speed up the breeding process. Alongside visual assessments, it is now supported by cameras and sensors that continuously collect data. AI and advanced algorithms analyse this information, allowing breeders to better understand heritability patterns and create more effective crossings. Digital phenotyping allows constant evaluation, more accurate predictions and a more efficient selection of new varieties. Also known as Data Driven Breeding, this process is so promising that funding has recently been made available to further its development.

    Innovation on all fronts
The Breeding Accel companies not only showcased joint innovations but also highlighted their own individual developments:

    • Schoneveld Breeding won the IPM Novelty 2025 award for their unique breeding success Illusia!
    • Royal Van Zanten attracted a lot of attention with their new pot alstroemeria Lizzy and pot chrysanthemum Artistic® Jeff.
    • Labeau shared more about their brand new lab in Turkey, set to start production soon. They also presented their striking Phalaenopsis Fearless Fox with its unique warm orange colour.
    • Fresh Forward handed out samples of two of their apple varieties, Bloss and Magic Star, and engaged in inspiring discussions about cross-pollination between the ornamental horticulture and fresh produce sectors.
    • KP Holland showcased their young plant material and thus differed in its presentation from the other Breeding Accel exhibitors. This gave visitors a complete insight into the company’s entire range, from young plant to finished product.
    • Interplant Roses successfully captivated florists, event planners, retailers and flower wholesalers from all over Europe with their spray roses.
